BREAKING NEWS: Windows XP Lives Past June 30th! Sort Of.

I’ve just seen the news that Windows XP is going to be around past June 30th. Here’s the catch: It will only be sold for what are called “Ultra Low Cost PCs” rather than for any type of computer. Ultra Low Cost PCs are computers with slower processors, smaller screens, and in many cases flash memory for storage, rather than a traditional hard drive (think Asus EeePC). With the sort of capabilities of that these PCs have (or lack of capabilities), Vista will pretty much kill these machines. I’m guessing that Asus “encouraged” Microsoft to do this, but I have no proof of that of course.

One has to wonder if this will eventually extend to every machine if Vista’s adoption rate is still slow in June….
