According to this news report, talks between RIM (makers of the highly addictive BlackBerry) and the Indian Department Of Telecom (who has on two occasions threatened to shut down the BlackBerry service in India) were “fruitful.” New meetings are scheduled for the 15th of the month where it is said that RIM will demonstrate how to legally snoop on BlackBerry messages.
Here’s why RIM caving in to India is a dumb idea: Other countries are going to line up and want the same treatment from RIM. That kills the security aspect of using the device, which in turn takes away one huge incentive to use the BlackBerry. Also, don’t think it will stop with RIM. ANYONE who does anything similar is going to be next on the list (Microsoft with the DirectPush technology for example).
There of course is an upside to this: If I stop using the BlackBerry, I may get some free time back into my life and my thumbs will feel better.
