This morning (which is a bit unusual) Apple posted the MacOS 10.5.6 update. As usual it has the performance improvemnets, fixes and security updates you have come to expect (you can read the full changelog here). But here’s a few things that should get your attention:
- Improves the reliability of AirPort connections, including improvements when roaming in large wireless networks with an Intel-based Mac. Since AirPort issues have been present in OS X 10.5 for some time, you can expect that many portable Mac users will be happy to see this.
- Includes general improvements to gaming performance. From the reports that I’ve read, it improves OpenGL performance. First person shooter players will love this.
- Fixes issues that could cause Time Machine to state the backup volume could not be found. This issue has annoyed many a Mac user.
There is one thing that does stand out for me. This update “Improves the performance and reliability of Chess.” I guess that was a major problem that they had to fix.

I personally like grabbing the Combo updater and updating that way as I find that I have less problems that way. Please leave a comment and let us know what your experiences are with this update. I’ll post mine later tonight.
UPDATE: Installed the combo update (I never go the Software Update route). Nothing “bad” happened. One thing that I did notice is that I now have seperate Trackpad and Keyboard & Mouse preferance panels in System Preferences. Some applications do seem to start faster as well. If I come across anything earth shattering, I’ll post it here.
