2011: Year In Review

2011 was a very interesting year for the tech industry. But a handful of things stood out for me last year:

Biggest fall from grace: This one goes to RIM. They put out a tablet that nobody wants to buy without a deep discount. Their profits nosedived along with their stock value. Not to mention that their next generation products have been delayed until the latter half of 2012. Bottom line: Stick a fork in them, they’re done.

Saddest moment of the year: The death of Steve Jobs.

Most annoying tech trend: This one is a holdover from last year, it’s the patent lawsuit. Expect this one to continue in to 2012 and beyond.

Biggest rise of the year: iOS and Android phones have dominated smartphone market in 2011. They took up the slack left by RIM and expect that that to continue in 2012.

Most popular story on the blog this year: A story that posted about iPads being banned by the Russian government was the most viewed story on the blog this year. That’s a change from last year where Rogers Communications dominated the top five stories of last year with three.

Biggest threat to the tech world: I didn’t get around to covering this in my blog, but it’s SOPA. The Stop Online Piracy Act which if passed will infringe on First Amendment rights, censor and will cripple the Internet. If the US is smart, they will not pass this act. Unless they want prove how backwards they are.

I can’t wait to see what 2012 has in store for the tech industry. Any ideas?
