Microsoft Defeats Feds In Court

You might recall that Microsoft had been fighting the US Government to stop them from accessing data that is on servers that Microsoft owns which are located overseas.Well, the news is out that Microsoft has won that fight. The Federal Appeals Court found [Warning: PDF] in favour of Microsoft. The court said in its conclusion that the demands of the US government would effectively allow the US Stored Communications Act (SCA) to be used to gain access to any information anywhere in the world, a use for which it was never intended.

Privacy advocates will love this ruling, and so will Microsoft of course. But it’s a safe bet that the US Government is less than thrilled. Thus you can fully expect that this might be a topic of debate seeing as it is election season in the US.
