Apple Releases iOS 12.5.5 To Patch The Vulnerabilities That Are Used By The NSO Group

Posted in Commentary with tags on September 23, 2021 by itnerd

Recently, Apple released iOS 14.8 to address the vulnerabilities that allowed The NSO Group to pwn iPhones with their Pegasus spyware. Now it appears that the same fixes have been brought down to iOS 12 users who could not update to iOS 13, 14 or iOS 15. Devices that are unable to update to iOS 13 or 14 include the iPhone 5s, ‌iPhone‌ 6, ‌iPhone‌ 6 Plus, iPod touch 6, original iPad Air, iPad mini 2, and ‌iPad mini‌ 3.

If you go to the Settings app, tapping on “General,” and selecting the “Software Update”, you should see that iOS 12.5.5 was released, and in Apple’s security information, it mentions three exploits that “may have been actively exploited” with one of them found by The University Of Toronto’s Citizen Lab. That’s the same people who have been tracking the exploits that are used by The NSO Group and brought them to Apple’s attention. Thus based on that, this is something that you should install ASAP.

UPDATE: Apple also released Security Update 2021-006 for macOS Catalina. The security notes say that it fixes one of the three exploits mentioned above. You should likely update to that as well to protect yourself.

Procore Announces New Innovation Connecting Construction With Mobile Personalization, Messaging & Investments In AI

Posted in Commentary with tags on September 23, 2021 by itnerd

Procore Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: PCOR), a leading provider of construction management software, today announced the next wave of enhancements for a smarter and more connected platform.

Procore Quick Capture Highlights Investment in Mobile, AI and ML

Procore is bringing innovations to mobile that connect the field and office. With acquisitions of INDUS.AI and Avata Intelligence, Procore has invested in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technology across its platform to help unlock the value of project data and drive efficiencies.
Procore Quick Capture is voice-enabled input technology that will launch in 2022, automating and simplifying data entry in the field by “telling” Procore what it should enter. With Procore Quick Capture on the Punch tool, users will be able capture a video of punch items and simply talk to Procore. Through AI and ML, Procore will create the punch item, attach a photo, and even assign it to the appropriate trade. Early testing has shown that this new voice-enabled punch can cut down the time required to capture and log information in the field for reporting by at least 50%.

Procore Conversations is Contextual Messaging for Construction

Collaboration on projects starts with communication. Today, that communication is rigid and is fragmented across multiple channels, such as email, text, and third-party messaging solutions. Procore Conversations, available in pilot in the fourth quarter of 2021, brings intuitive, contextual messaging to Procore, saving time and integrating communication across channels. Conversations are organized, prioritized, and easily accessible on mobile and web. Critical updates, questions, and discussions will happen seamlessly across the office and field, and are contextual to the item being discussed, such as an RFI, Change Order, or Observation.

New Mobile Home Experience Personalizes and Prioritizes Daily Work

Procore is focused on creating unique experiences for every stakeholder in construction. That experience starts with mobile, where customers will have unique experiences based on who they are and their role in the construction project. The new mobile home experience, available in the fourth quarter of 2021, prioritizes daily work, with quick access to check in on progress, change status or create a new item – RFI, Observations, or Punch. It ensures when customers are in the field they have a complete view, so projects stay on schedule.

Connecting Everyone in Construction with The Procore Construction Network

Procore’s mission is to connect everyone in construction on a global platform. Currently in pilot, the Procore Construction Network is a free online business directory connecting general contractors, specialty contractors, owners, architects, engineers, suppliers, and vendors. With location-based search and advanced filters, customers will be able to use the Procore Construction Network to quickly find and connect with new construction partners. This will make it easier for construction professionals to expand their online presence, promote their businesses, and grow their networks.

Procore’s new collaborative document management solution, coming soon, will offer a more flexible and configurable approach, making it easier and faster to access and collaborate on documents. It will provide customers with an integrated markup experience, offer custom approval workflows with granular file level permissions, and provide a solution that helps them meet common data environment (CDE) requirements and ISO compliance standards.

Global Cloud Infrastructure and Security Features to Meet Global Needs

Procore has expanded its global infrastructure with 11 new cloud data centers for file storage, now 15 in total, that allow customers to store certain project data locally, while also improving the speed and performance of the platform. Procore provides enterprise grade security and privacy features such as data encryption-at-rest, managed bug bounty program, strict access control policies, and more. Procore solutions can assist customers in meeting their data privacy and governance requirements, including GDPR, California’s Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and Australia’s Privacy Act of 1988 — learn more here

Platform Flexibility and Global Enhancements Drive Customer Success

With feedback from global customers, Procore is building customization into the platform to meet the diverse needs of customers around the world. Whether building an inspection test plan in Australia or contractual correspondence in Germany, Procore’s customizable platform flexes to support regional business needs. Custom and Configurable fields are now supported by every product across the platform.

Industry Votes Procore as Top Construction Platform Solution

Procore was recently named the tenth best software company in the world on The Software Report’s list of 100 Top Software Companies of 2021, and received top honors from G2 in eight categories of software: construction management, construction project management, bid management, construction ERP, construction drawing management, construction accounting, punch list, and jobsite management software.

Call to action to restore the world’s forests and combat climate change

Any company aiming to remain competitive and viable beyond this decade is redefining its business priorities around accelerated, expansive change that is also better for the planet. We must change the way we make and use products to address the climate crisis and protect nature to prevent the loss of critical ecosystems.

As part of our ambition to become the world’s most sustainable and just technology company, this week HP is proud to help bring Trees for Jane to the world as its founding partner. Announced this week, Trees for Jane is a new grass roots campaign inspired by one of the world’s most renowned environmentalists, Dr. Jane Goodall, who issued a call to action to help drive meaningful change by participating in the campaign for the protection, restoration and planting of trees to restore the world’s forests.

Aligned with the UN’s Decade on Ecosystem Restoration commitment, Trees for Jane is aimed at empowering everyone from individuals to companies to plant and care for their own tree or trees in their backyards, rooftops or with local community groups. Alternatively, they can support forest protection and restoration programs led by indigenous leaders, forest communities, and on-the-ground NGOs who have been working to stop deforestation and bring back lost forests. In partnership with Trees for Jane, HP is encouraging its global partner community to plant and grow trees of their own in support of climate action. Guest Post: TikTok was the most often forged app linked to Covid-19 in 2021 H1 Says Atlas VPN

Posted in Commentary with tags on September 23, 2021 by itnerd

With 732 million users worldwide, TikTok, a trending video-sharing platform, is one of today’s most popular social media networks. During the lockdown, the app’s short and amusing videos drew a lot of attention, but it was not long before cybercriminals took advantage of TikTok’s fame for their own gain.

According to the data presented by the Atlas VPN team, TikTok was the most impersonated app in Covid-19 related to Android app scams in the first half of 2021. There were a total of 88 TikTok copy-cat apps detected spreading FakeApp malware.

Malicious applications impersonating organizations that give out free laptops to students were also highly prevalent. There were 37 bogus Android laptop registration applications detected in H1 2021.

The third spot on the list is occupied by apps impersonating vaccine registration channels. Overall, 14 such malicious applications were found in the first half of this year.

Fake apps often imitate login pages of the official apps to harvest user’s credentials and other personal data. They are typically distributed through third-party app stores, but on occasion, fake apps make it to the official Google Play store as well.

Ruth Cizynski, the cybersecurity researcher and writer at Atlas VPN, gives advice on how to recognize fake applications:

“What makes fake apps so dangerous is that they are typically designed to look exactly like an official app, making them hard to spot. The best defense consumers have against falling prey to fake app downloads is knowing what to look out for. Reading the apps reviews, taking some time to research the developers, and reading the permissions agreement are just some of the things consumers should do before proceeding with an app.”

The US most affected by Covid-19-related threats

Apart from fake apps, cybercriminals have launched multiple other cyberattacks leveraging the global pandemic, including phishing campaigns, malicious URLs, as well as malware.

While cyberattacks were widespread across the world, some countries suffered more than others. In total, 35.9% of such threats affected the United States in the first half of 2021.

Other highly affected countries include Germany (18.9%), Colombia (10.5%), Italy (3%), and Spain (2.5%).

Microsoft Announces Surface Duo 2 and Surface Pro 8

Posted in Commentary with tags on September 23, 2021 by itnerd

At Microsoft’s Surface event yesterday, Microsoft announced its Surface Duo 2 dual-screen Android smartphone, featuring a trio of new cameras, a faster processor, larger displays, and support for 5G. The company also unveiled a successor to the Surface Book line of laptops, the Surface Laptop Studio, as well as the Surface Pro 8.

The last Surface Duo was a flop. So I wonder if this second generation device is going to any more successful. As for a Surface Pro 8, it is going to get attention from companies and the like as they always do. Especially with the 120 Hz screen in the Surface Pro 8. I’d be interested in seeing these devices and seeing what they’re like as with Windows 11 on the horizon, you can expect new devices to be hitting the market.
