#Fail: New Dell BIOS Updates Bricks Laptops & Desktops

Advertisements

If you have a Dell laptop of desktop, and you were keen on updating the BIOS to make sure you’re up to date, my advice is don’t do it because you run the risk of bricking the machine. Customer reports shared on Dell’s official community website which you can see here and here along with Reddit which you can see here and here, warn that the latest BIOS version which is version 1.14.3 for Latitude laptops, 2.8.0 for Inspiron, and 1.0.18 for Aurora R8) will cause booting issues. The impacted systems will power up, peripheral lights and displays will not turn on. Then when they boot up, they’ll go straight to a blue screen and shut down again.

The unofficial fix until Dell releases an update to address the bugs leading to boot issues is a downgrade to a previous firmware version. A user describes the process to do so here which doesn’t exactly sound easy. But this may not work for everyone. Thus you might be better off contacting Dell if you are in this situation for assistance.

Talk about getting a lump of coal for Christmas.
