Sony Xperia Play & Arc Hands On
I went to a Sony Ericsson event tonight to see the new Sony Xperia Play and Arc phones which I have to admit are pretty cutting edge. First the Xperia Play. This is what Sony calls the first PlayStation certified phone, and Playstation fanbois will find it very familiar because it has the standard D-pad and game keys that you’ll find on your PS3. The graphics are stunning and the games that I tried were impressive. Plus it’s a pretty good phone too. It has Android Gingerbread and will speak to your corporate e-mail server too. The latter will allow you to get this for work, as long as you don’t tell your boss about the gaming functions. The big question is can it beat the iPhone? I think it has a shot as it’s got the PlayStation name attached to it. Time (and sales) will tell the story on that front.
The Xperia Arc is less about gaming and more about a smartphone with top notch media functionality. You can hook it up to your TV via HDMI and get a great picture when displaying movies (which you can shoot in 720P HD) or pictures (8.1 MP). It has an even more stunning screen than the Xperia Play and incorporates the Bravia Engine and Sony’s Exmor R photo engine to make images stunningly good.
One thing that you’ll notice about this phone is how thin it is. Just check out the picture below. Besides being thin, it’s light. My wife commented that it is sexy and she’d like it…. If it had a real keyboard. If you’re cool with not having a keyboard, this phone is worth considering.
Both phones should either be in stores now, or in the case of Rogers will be shortly. Check them out and I think you might be impressed enough to offer up your credit card to score one of these phones.
