Microsoft Releases Emergency Patch To Fix Windows Hole…. Download It Now!

If you’re a Windows user (and who isn’t these days), then you need to run Windows Update now. There’s an out of band update that has been released today that plugs a really critical hole that could allow an attacker to take control of your computer. Here’s what Microsoft said about the hole:

This security update resolves a publicly disclosed vulnerability in Windows Shell. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if the icon of a specially crafted shortcut is displayed. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

It affects all versions of Windows but patches are only available from XP SP3 to Windows 7. Windows 2000 and Windows XP users running SP1 and SP2 need to update get the fix. If I were you, I’d download this update now as there are exploits floating around that take advantage of this hole.
