Dallas Cowboys Forget To Renew Their Domain Name

I rarely talk about sports on this blog for two reasons. First, sports and technology rarely mix. Second is the fact that I live in Toronto which means that we’re subjected to Maple Leaf Sports And Entertainment who are more obsessed with profits rather than putting together quality NHL (The Maple Leafs), NBA (The Raptors), and MLS (Toronto FC) teams that win and make the playoffs.

But I digress.

This is one of these times that sports and technology do mix. That’s because the Dallas Cowboys forgot to renew their domain name which took the team website offline for up to 48 hours depending on where on the Internet you happen to be:

The club apparently forgot to renew its registration on the dallascowboys.com domain and the site was pulled Sunday night, replaced with a generic page indicating the address was available for purchase from Network Solutions LLC.

The team quickly renewed its registration, but it takes up to 48 hours for all Internet servers to recognize renewals.

As a result, many fans visiting the site Monday eager for news about the Cowboys’ flop in Green Bay and the status of head coach Wade Phillips were greeted with a stock image of two kids playing soccer.

Here’s the funny part. The person responsible for renewing the site is Jerry Jones Jr. who is the son of Jerry Jones who was quoted this past week when he fired coach Wade Phillips that he was sick of failure and incompetence. Seeing as the team website is one of ways that the team markets itself, will he lower the boom on his son? I’m guessing not. Still Jones Jr. isn’t the first person to forget to renew a high profile domain name. Microsoft once forgot to renew the Hotmail domain name back in 1999 and it took a LINUX user to come to their rescue.
