Facebook Rolls Out A New Messaging Service…. Be Very Afraid

It was hyped, and it was rumored. When the announcement finally came today, it sort of lived up to the hype. The Facebook bunch released a new messaging service that goes beyond e-mail….. Though everyone of Facebook will eventually get an @facebook.com e-mail address. Here’s the rest of the story from the Facebook blog:

You decide how you want to talk to your friends: via SMS, chat, email or Messages. They will receive your message through whatever medium or device is convenient for them, and you can both have a conversation in real time.  You shouldn’t have to remember who prefers IM over email or worry about which technology to use.  Simply choose their name and type a message.

Interesting. But there’s more:

Messages is built for communicating with your friends, so it made sense to organize primarily around people.  All of your messages with someone will be together in one place, whether they are sent over chat, email or SMS. You can see everything you’ve discussed with each friend as a single conversation.

Okay. I admit it, this is very interesting. This will be rolling out to users over the next few months. Users will get an invite and be hooked up from there. Of course you have to look past Facebook’s well documented privacy issues to want to use this service. But I’m sure that Mark Zuckerberg will find quite a few suckers users who will sign up for this willingly. If you want to find out more, click here.

It will be interesting to see how Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo respond to this.
