I have a new toy to play with this week. It’s the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play smartphone which bills itself as a “PlayStation Certified” phone. In other words, it’s a phone that happens to play games very well. How well? I’ll get to that in a second. Let me first get to the nuts and bolts of this phone. First of all, this phone runs Android (specifically Android Gingerbread). That means you get a speedy mobile OS that gives you access to not only the Android Market, but you’ll get games specifically optimized for the Xperia Play.
Unique to this phone is a slide out gamepad for your gaming fun. It works quite well and I was able to kick some serious butt in the Bruce Lee side scrolling fighting game that comes with the phone. Other games that come with the phone are Asphalt 6, HN2011, FIFA 10, Madden 11, and Star Battalion. You can’t talk about games without talking about the graphics and sound. I found the sound to be above average. Definitely better than some smartphones I’ve used lately. The graphics however were impressive though. There was no lag whatsoever and I found it difficult to believe that this was a smart phone I was playing games on. Sony Ericsson has that part dialed in. Bottom line, if you want a phone to play games on, this should be on your list to check out.
So how does it stack up as a smartphone? Tune in tomorrow and see part 2 of this review.
