Sony Brings The Xperia U To Canada Via Fido

I’ve always had a soft spot for Sony smartphones. Today I got a press release announcing a new smartphone called the Xperia U:

Available for $30 on select 3-year Fido Agreements, the Xperia U is a smartphone designed to reflect a consumer’s unique personality. At the base of the Xperia U is a transparent element that illuminates depending on the colour theme you have chosen. By clicking on the gallery application the transparent element will change to match the colour of photos viewed in the gallery or the cover art of music tracks playing on the smartphone. The Xperia U can also be customized with exchangeable caps and themes to reflect consumers’ style and mood.

Sounds good so far, but what about the specs? Here’s a list:

  • 1 GHz dual-core processor for super fast performance.
  • 5MP camera with unique fast capture, HD recording and Sony technology to capture 2D and 3D panoramic images.
  • Front-facing VGA camera.
  • 3.5″ Reality Display powered by Mobile BRAVIA® Engine (measured diagonally).
  • Crisp and loud listening with xLOUD and 3D surround sound audio technology.
  • Available in black with a pink exchangeable cap for the base of the smartphone in the box.
  • Launches on Android™ platform 2.3 (Gingerbread).

To top it off, users can listen to millions of songs through Sony Entertainment Network’s Music Unlimited service, or watch their favorite Hollywood blockbusters and TV shows with the Video Unlimited* service. Users can also try the Music Unlimited service free for 30 days with the premium service.

Sony would score some points with me by passing along a unit to review.
