Hey IT Nerd! What Tires Did You Get For Your Car?

I was kind of surprised that I got this question as this is a technology blog. But I’ll happily answer the question.

After doing a lot of research, I went with the Continental ExtremeContact DWS. The whole idea behind this tire is it is a true 4 season tire as opposed to all season tires which should be called three season tires because they don’t work well in winter. The ExtremeContact DWS excels in dry, wet and snow according to the research that I’ve done. I’ve only had them for a few days but I can make these observations:

  • Compared to the tires that came off the car, the amount of road noise has nosedived to the point that I need to drop the volume of the radio as it actually sounds too loud now.
  • They seem to handle well in dry and wet. I don’t know about the snow part but my wife and I do plan to go cross country skiing this weekend if the weather holds so we’ll find out.
  • The handling of the car (a 2009 Toyota Matrix XR AWD) seems a bit sharper with these tires.
  • I haven’t got hard numbers (yet) but gas mileage seems to have improved.

All in all, I’m happy with this tire choice.

One other thing I should mention is that I was recommended to Tires23.com as they have a reputation for fast service, carrying most major brands, and having great prices. When it comes to the first and last points, I got the job done in under an hour and they saved me over $200 versus anyone else who carried these tires. I was impressed. If you need tires and you live in Toronto, you should check them out.
