#Fail In Crucial UK Security Test For BlackBerry??

This is a wee bit confusing.

First this story appeared yesterday with bad news from the UK for BlackBerry:

According to The Guardian newspaper, the UK’s Computer Experts Security Group (CESG) has refused to endorse BlackBerry’s new BB10 platform, despite the fact that BlackBerry phones have traditionally been the preferred devices for government workers because of their high security thresholds.
Earlier iterations of the devices succeeded in passing the stringent CESG guidelines, but the new BlackBerry 10 operating system has yet to prove its worth – a damaging blow to the troubled Toronto-based manufacturer as it rolls out its new handsets to the world.

Seeing as the BlackBerry has tended to be at the top of the food chain when it comes to security, this is a major hit. Except that it may not be true. BlackBerry hit back with this via the Financial Post:

In a statement, a BlackBerry company spokesperson called the Guardian report “both false and misleading.”

There’s more. Here’s what the UK government had to say in a separate story:

“We are in ongoing discussions with BlackBerry about the use of BlackBerry 10 in government. We have not yet performed a security evaluation of that platform, but we expect to be issuing Platform Guidance in the summer, this will cover a number of platforms including BlackBerry 10 (and using Balance). We have a strong security partnership with BlackBerry and this gives us confidence that BlackBerry 10 is likely to represent a viable solution for UK Government.”

So, the question is this: What’s the real story here? I’m going to guess the latter as references to the story in The Guardian cannot be found on the Internet as they return page not found errors. Though one to wonder if there’s going to be some sort of clarification from them on this front.

I’ll keep an eye on this one as it might become interesting.
