Hey IT Nerd! What Do You Think Of BlackBerry Killing Unlimited BBM With The Release Of BB10?

I didn’t cover this feature when I reviewed the BlackBerry Z10 because I didn’t have a second Z10 to work with, but the BlackBerry Z10 comes with a video version of BlackBerry Messenger that allows you to share what’s on your screen. The thing is that BlackBerry Messenger used to be an unlimited feature. Now it’s not. Want examples? Rogers and Bell to name two carriers in Canada are both offering deals to give Z10 users unlimited BlackBerry Messenger for a limited time. Presumably after that you have to pay up to use it.

Compare that to FaceTime which is the video chatting feature on the iPhone is included in whatever data plan you have. That means it will appeal to a bunch of demographics such as teenagers, companies who want to control costs, and those in emerging markets where wireless dominates over landlines. Also, you can get services on the BlackBerry like WhatsApp and 2Go which gives users an alternative to BlackBerry Messenger. With all of that in mind, BlackBerry deciding to charge for BlackBerry Messenger seems kind of short sighted to me.

We’ll have to keep an eye on this, but this could quickly turn into a gong show for BlackBerry if they are not careful.
