The way I see it, BlackBerry is in deep trouble. On top of what I wrote at 8AM this morning, I had the chance to listen in to the BlackBerry earnings (if you could call it that seeing as they posted a loss that nobody expected) call and walked away with two items:
- While 6.8 million smartphones were sold by BlackBerry in the quarter, only 2.7 million were BB10 devices. That suggests that BB10 devices are not making the impact that they thought it should be.
- BlackBerry’s subscriber base nose dived to 72 million in fiscal Q1, down 4 million subs sequentially. That implies people are fleeing BlackBerry faster than they can sign people up.
All of this despite the fact that I among others think the Q10 and Z10 are great devices. Though I did say this when I reviewed the Z10:
If BlackBerry does fail to make a comeback, it won’t be because of the product. It will because either the Z10 came too late to save the company or the well documented lack of native apps like Instagram and Neflix will be responsible for putting the final nails in the coffin.
No wonder BlackBerry stock is down 27% as I type this.
I think that we can say that BlackBerry’s prospects for a comeback have taken a major hit today.
