Volvo Is Developing A Car That Parks Itself….. Seriously
Let’s say that you take your spouse out to a high class restaurant for dinner. The place might have valet parking. Do you trust your car to some teenager hoping he won’t trash your new car? Volvo says that you may not have to as Volvo is in the process of developing a car that parks itself.
This is no joke.
Here’s how it works. You drop the car off at a specified drop off zone. You give the command to the car to go find a parking spot via a smartphone app and sensors in the road help the car to navigate to a free parking space nearby. To make sure it doesn’t hit anything, it leverages the safety systems in the car such as City Safety And Pedestrian And Cyclist Detection With Full Auto Brake.
I’ve posted a video below that illustrates this concept. Thanks to Volvo for providing it:
Now if you think this is science fiction, it’s not. This technology closer than you think. The next generation Volvo XC90 will have autonomous steering which is the first time this technology will be commercially available. Watch for it at the end of 2014. And keep an eye on Volvo as you’re going to see more of this sort of technology appear in cars that you’ll be able to buy in the very near future.
