HTC and BlackBerry seem to have some things in common. They both have smartphone products that are great. Just check my reviews of the HTC One, BlackBerry Z10 and Q10 to see what I mean. These phones simply rock. But they also issues making money. Just like BlackBerry, HTC missed it’s targets with a drop of profits of 83% year over year:
The company reported net profit of NT$1.25 billion (US$41.6 million), down from NT$7.4 billion a year earlier. Revenue totalled NT$70.7 billion, down 22 percent.
Results for the quarter should have been boosted by sales of the new HTC One smartphone. It went on sale in April, although the company had originally hoped to launch it at the end of March. The delay put the HTC One in closer competition with Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S4 smartphone, which went on to reach sales of 10 million units within a month of its launch in late April.
So, how do they dig themselves out of this? Like BlackBerry, good product isn’t enough. I think there has to be a reason to buy HTC products rather than buy the competition. Clearly there isn’t that reason. Until that reason becomes clear, this company like BlackBerry will be in deep trouble. Perhaps Iron Man will come to the rescue?
