Hey IT Nerd! What Should I Do To Prepare My Mac For Resale?

This is a topic that is relevant to me as I am currently in the process of having my old MacBook Pro repaired so that I can donate it. Here’s what I plan on doing in order:

  1. De authorize the computer from iTunes. Since you only get five computers that you can authorize, why burn one on a computer you don’t own anymore? If you need instructions on how to do so, Apple has a document on that here.
  2. Turn off Find My Mac. That’s under System Preferences and iCloud. Simply uncheck the Find My Mac option. That way it doesn’t show up in Find My Mac/Find My iPhone.
  3. Sign out of iCloud. Apple has a document on how to do that here if you need it. This makes sure that iCloud doesn’t do anything “weird.”
  4. Back up your data. Though if you’re moving to another Mac like I did via the Migration Assistant, you could skip this step as you theoretically have all your data. But I wouldn’t do that.
  5. Reformat your drive and reinstall OS X. Apple has directions on how to do this depending if you have Lion or Mountain Lion.
  6. When you’re done, do NOT run the set up assistant. Simply shut down.

After you’ve done all of that, simply give the Mac some spit and polish to prepare it for it’s new home.
