Volvo Sells A Million Cars With Auto Brake Technology

Car companies like to talk about the fact that they make safe cars. But Volvo backs that sort of talk up with actually selling safe cars and lots of them. Case in point. Volvo announced yesterday that 1 million cars with auto brake technology have been sold. That’s one million cars and SUVs that have a technology that does any or all of the following (depending on which Volvo we’re talking about):

  • With the standard City Safety, the car applies the brakes automatically if the driver fails to react in time when the vehicle in front suddenly slows down or stops. The system is active at speeds up to 50 km/h.
  • Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with full auto brake is a groundbreaking technological solution. It can detect pedestrians who walk into the road as well as cyclists in front of the car, and warn the driver and automatically apply full braking power if the driver does not respond in time.
  • Collision Warning with full auto brake, active at all speeds, can help avoid collisions if the speed difference is 35 km/h or lower. If the relative speed is higher the collision impact will be reduced. The brakes are applied automatically if the driver does not act in response to the warning when a rear-end collision with another vehicle is imminent.

Frequent readers of this blog will note that the first two items I’ve talked about previously in detail.

There’s a simple reason why this matters. Let me quote Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor at Volvo Car Group:

“Several recent reports state that our groundbreaking auto braking technologies help reduce the risk of being involved in a rear-end accident by more than 20 per cent. One million Volvos with auto brake on the roads take us towards our aim that nobody should be killed or suffer serious injuries in a new Volvo car by the year 2020,”

Now, I will admit that there are other cars that stop themselves out there. But Volvo did it first and leads the way in terms of technologies like these. And given what’s coming in the next generation XC90, they’re going to be way out in front of the rest when it comes to auto brake technology. So Volvo selling a million cars with this technology makes us all safer.

Here’s to the next million cars with auto brake technology on board.
