For those of you who aren’t aware, VLC is an open source video player that plays any video format. I highly recommend it. But HBO doesn’t it seems. According to Torrent Freak, Google got a DMCA takedown notice citing copyright infringement. The net result would be that VLC would not show up in Google search results:
It’s an absolutely bizarre takedown request which is probably more a mistake from HBO’s overeager copyright hunting squad than it is a nefarious strategy in trying to kill the head of the snake (VLC) in order to destroy the body (all other copyright infringement cases). But still! This ‘mistake’ by HBO does speak to the sort of shotgun spray that networks and studios use to push Google to remove cases of copyright infringement that aren’t actually cases of copyright infringement.
This is a strategy that has a rather horrific track record:
Over the past months HBO and many other copyright holders have built up a dubious track record when it comes to DMCA takedown notices. In addition to many “bogus” claims the company also tried to have its own website removed from Google.
Thus one wonders why HBO and others don’t just smarten up and find other ways of dealing with piracy. Either that or there has to some some sort of punishment for stuff like this. Either way, these erroneous takedown notices have to stop.
