Report: 250 Laid Off At BlackBerry

The Toronto Star is reporting that 250 people who “supported the company’s manufacturing, research and development efforts” were laid off on Tuesday. Details are scarce, but this report has also popped up at the CBC, Global, among other media outlets. The only comment that was made by BlackBerry was posted in the Global story:

“This is part of the next stage of our turnaround plan to increase efficiencies and scale our company correctly for new opportunities in mobile computing. We will be as transparent as possible as those plans evolve,”

One gets the sense that this is the start of another round of job shedding. If so, I suspect that many BlackBerry employees are currently mass e-mailing their CVs so that they can find another opportunity. After all, it’s better to leave on your own accord rather than to come into work one day and find that you no longer have a job. That’s not going to help BlackBerry turn things around. So I hope for their sake that they have a plan to manage this. Otherwise, they may have a bigger problem on their hands.
