If it wasn’t clear before that the Big Three are losing the fight to keep Verizon out of Canada, it is now with The Globe And Mail saying that they are changing tactics. Their new plan? Convince Canadians that Verizon would spy on you:
The planned campaign, which has yet to get a final green light, will focus on how Verizon’s entry into Canada could open the door to overreaching surveillance and a loss of privacy for Canadians, said the sources, who declined to be named as the plans are not yet public.
If the companies sign off on the proposals, the ads will start appearing in newspapers, online and on radio next week in the hope that they will swing public opinion behind the three players and persuade the government to change its mind.
Telus, BCE and Rogers declined to comment on any changes to the campaign.
This is a real stretch. It is inconceivable that in the current environment of Edward Snowden and the like that any company would be stupid enough to do this. Yes, I will admit that US telcos have done this on behalf of spy agencies like the NSA. It’s another thing to do this outside the US. Besides, how do we know that Telus, Rogers, and Bell aren’t doing this on behalf of the Communications Security Establishment? Never heard of them? They’re the Canadian equivalent of the NSA. If they do that, that makes Verizon no worse in my mind.
My advice to the big three. Don’t use this strategy. It only makes you look desperate.
