BBM For Android Rollout Stopped Due To Unreleased Version [UPDATED]

As if BlackBerry doesn’t have enough problems. Their latest issue has to do with the rollout of BBM for Android and iOS. Apparently there’s an unreleased Android version that’s causing problems and resulting in a “pause” to the rollout according to the company blog:

Prior to launching BBM for Android, an unreleased version of the BBM for Android app was posted online. The interest and enthusiasm we have seen already – more than 1.1 million active users in the first 8 hours without even launching the official Android app – is incredible. Consequently, this unreleased version caused issues, which we have attempted to address throughout the day.

The company promises to restart the staggered rollout as soon as the issues are fixed. You know, I find it interesting that there’s this much demand for BBM on other platforms. It surprises me actually. I wonder how this helps them? They sure aren’t making a dime off of bringing BBM to other platforms seeing as it’s free. So other than buzz, I can’t see how this will really make a difference.

UPDATE: A new blog post written by Andrew Bocking, head of BBM at BlackBerry gives a lot more details about what is going on.
