In this day and age, you have to make sure that you keep the personal info of the people you deal with under lock and key both physically and digitally. If you don’t bad things can and will happen. Case in point is some news that’s breaking. Peel Region is just west of Toronto and they have had the health info of 18,000 people that was residing on an SD card stolen:
Emil Kolb, chair of the Region of Peel, said in a statement that the information belonged to people who participated in Peel Public Health’s Healthy Babies Healthy Children Program between March 2010 and August 2011, as well as a few people who participated in the program at earlier dates.
The unencrypted SD card was in a bag that was stolen from the employee’s car.
Let’s count the ways this is a #fail:
- The info was on an SD card. Why in this day and age would anyone think it’s a great idea to put such info on a removable medium?
- The SD card left the building and was unencrypted. Why in this day and age would this SD card leave the building in an unencrypted format?
There are plenty of solutions that allows one to have access to sensitive data while the data resides behind a firewall or is otherwise secure. Encryption, secure remote access, you name it. Thus this sort of thing should never, ever happen in my opinion.
I truly think that those who are part of this data breach need to go find a lawyer and sue Peel Region. If organizations cannot figure out how to secure this sort of data by themselves, perhaps some litigation will help to speed up the process?
