I have to give Microsoft credit for turning around the Surface Tablet lineup. After the original was a spectacular failure, the Surface seems to be a hit based on Microsoft’s earnings report. Besides making $6.56 billion on revenue of $24.52 billion (which by the way were above expectations), the division that is responsible for the Surface tablets earned $893 million in revenue which was more than double that of the previous quarter. It should be noted that the division in question is not yet profitable. But it’s a turnaround that is impressive seeing as Microsoft wrote down almost a billion dollars of the tablets not too long ago and I among others had declared the Surface dead and buried. How times have changed.
If there’s a storm cloud on the horizon, it’s the Nokia purchase. According to these numbers [WARNING: PDF] Nokia had Lumia sales drop to 8.2 million devices from 8.8 million the previous quarter. Compare that to Apple who is rumored to have sold over 55 million iPhones. That’s not a good sign for Microsoft.
