BREAKING: Amazon Announces Fire Smartphone

I suspect that Amazon through the release of their new Fire smartphone is going to make the smartphone wars very interesting. Here’s why starting with the specs:

  • Quad-core 2.2GHz  processor
  • 4.7-Inch IPS 720p HD Gorilla Glass display that Amazon says is bright enough to be visible in outdoor lighting.
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 32GB or 64GB
  • Dual stereo speakers
  • LTE, 802.11 A/B/G/N/AC, Bluetooth
  • Fire OS 3.5 (which is Android based)
  • 13-megapixel rear camera and front-facing camera for video chats. There’s also a dedicated camera button. It will sport an unheard of  six individual camera modules.
  • A unique combination of sensors and four front-facing cameras that track the user’s head in order to facilitate a variety of 3D effects and gesture controls.
  • Unlimited cloud storage for photos via the Amazon Cloud Drive service.
  • Integration with Amazon’s various Prime services
  • Integrated Mayday Service that allows direct access to Amazon Tech Support.
  • Something that is sure to get a lot of attention is Firefly. This feature uses the camera to scan barcodes on products and pull them up in Amazon’s store. Firefly can also listen to music or TV shows and recognize them and pull them up in Amazon’s digital shop. The latter sounds like Shazam to me. Phone numbers and email addresses are recognized by Firefly as well. Once they are, they can be added to a new contact or used to initiate a call or email. To top it off, there’s a dedicated button for Firefly.

The phone will be exclusive to AT&T in the US and go for $199 for the 32GB version and $299 for the 64GB version. Off contract, the phone will start at $650. Twelve months of Amazon Prime service is included for free.. Expect it to ship on July 25th. No word on whether Amazon will bring this phone to Canada at this point. Rogers, Telus, Bell, Wind, can you hook us up?
