BlackBerry Announces The Passport [UPDATED x2]

I once said that the BlackBerry Z30 was going to be the device that saves them. I’m taking that back as I now think that the Passport is going to do that instead. Now I will admit that I am basing this on a device that I have not seen nor touched yet (though I do have a request into BlackBerry to get one…. Stay tuned). But having said that, everything I’ve seen in regards to the Passport via a webcast hosted by BlackBerry CEO John Chen and guest starring hockey legend Wayne Gretzky suggests that this is not just another BlackBerry.

For starters it looks very different than anything else out there. It has a three row keyboard and a very wide 4.5″ SQUARE screen. The latter enables you to see more content on the screen. The device itself is the size of a Canadian passport (thus the name Passport). The former is very unique as its touch-enabled keyboard lets you perform many touch functions right on the keyboard. Another feature is outstanding battery life. BlackBerry claims 36 hours and when I get one I’ll find out how accurate that is.

Here are some key specs:

  • 13 Megapixel camera with the ability to record video in 1080p
  • 2.2 GHz Quad Core processor
  • BlackBerry OS 10.3
  • BlackBerry Digital Assistant  which is like Siri or Google Now

The BlackBerry Passport will be available immediately in Canada and the U.S. and it will be available in 30 countries by the end of 2014. As mentioned earlier, I am working on getting one to review. Please watch for it in the near future.

UPDATE: I’ve got an e-mail from Rogers saying that the Passport will be available on October 1st for $249.99 on a two year plan. I’ll also provide a link to more info on the Passport.

UPDATE #2: Telus let me know that they are selling the Passport TODAY for $200 on a two year plan. That price is a limited time offer.
