Today at CES, Google announced Google Cast which is a new music streaming technology that lets users stream sound from their smartphone, tablet, or Chrome-based web browser to Google Cast-ready speakers. What makes Google Cast interesting is that it supports the following platforms:
- iPhone
- iPad
- Android Phones
- Android tablets,
- Any Mac or PC with a Chrome browser.
Apps like Pandora, iHeartRadio, and Google Play Music among among others are capable of streaming to compatible speakers. Speaking of the speakers, Google Cast streams content from the cloud rather than directly from the control device. As a result, Google promises users will receive the best sound quality and can multitask on their devices without disturbing the streams. That makes it more like ChromeCast and less like Apple’s AirPlay.
Sony, LG, and HEOS by Denon will have Google Cast compatible speakers this spring with others jumping onto the bandwagon later this year including Android-based TVs, gaming consoles, and even set-top boxes.
