Windows 10 Update Hoses Your System

When Windows 10 first appeared, I commented that its mandatory update scheme was not really a good idea and I highlighted the fact that an update had caused grief for Windows 10 users.

Well folks, it’s happened again.

The recently-released cumulative update for Windows 10 (KB3140743) is reportedly causing problems. Symptoms include crashes, Blue Screens Of Death, and the inability to boot. The Windows 10 subreddit has many threads detailing the inability to boot. The only fix seems to be booting to a recovery ISO, uninstalling the update / rolling back, and hoping you don’t get hit again.

This should be a clear message to Microsoft that mandatory updates don’t work and they really need to give users control over what gets installed on their systems. Otherwise, you’ll keep seeing fiascos like these.

  1. as a ‘not tech-savvy’ user, I’ve been having loads of issues with 10, but almost entirely on the user experience side. Every update reinstalls the windows apps that I had taken care to remove. It’s not just technical frustrations but also an obnoxious indifference to the users preferences. I’m working on how to install 7 since 7 never seemed to have that problem.

  2. These forced updates are the single biggest reason I’ve stuck with Windows 7 so far.
