Donald Trump Used To Lure Tech Talent To Canada

Donald Trump is a lot of things to a lot of people depending on whether you are for him or against him. But recruiting tool is a new one on me.

A Canadian startup is using Trump in its latest campaign to recruit tech talent, reports Silicon Beat. The company is called Sortable and they’ve got this edgy ad on their site which claims that 31% of Americans they’d surveyed would consider moving to Canada if Trump were elected President.

Now this behavior doesn’t seem to be isolated to just this one company as a coalition of Canadian mayors is visiting California this week to promote Canada’s booming technology sector. Toronto mayor John Tory told Bloomberg this:

“The embracing of diversity as opposed to it being some sort of political issue is a huge advantage we have.”

Having lived in Toronto for a significant part of my life, I can say that diversity is this city’s strength. Anyone who is afraid of Trump and what his brand of politics brings would feel right at home here. I guess that explains why The Washington Post reported a surge in Google searches in March for “how can I move to Canada,”  which apparently actually slowing down the Canadian government’s immigration web site.

If Trump gets the Republican nomination, or actually becomes President, you might see an exodus of Americans to Canada on a scale not seen since the Vietnam war.  I’d keep an eye on this space as this story could be very interesting to watch.
