AMC Raises, Then Drops Idea Of Texting Friendly Theaters

From the “Are you smoking crack??” file was this idea from movie theater chain AMC to have texting friendly theaters. In other words, theaters where you can text your friends during a movie. Here’s the logic that AMC CEO Adam Aron is using via Engadget:

“When you tell a 22-year-old to turn off their phone, don’t ruin the movie, they hear ‘please cut off your left arm above the elbow,'”

I’ll just stop there for a second and comment on this. This is the worst idea in the history of the universe. What AMC really needs to do is tell these millennials to put away their phones because the rest of us want to enjoy the movie. Or take a page out of Canadian movie chain Cineplex Odeon who have VIP theaters where there are no kids, they have gourmet food along with alcohol, better seating, food and drink service at your seat, and oh yeah, adults who keep their phones turned off during the movie. Yes, it’s more expensive than a standard movie. But at least my wife and I enjoy the movie which makes it very much worth it.

I guess other people think this is a stupid idea as well because AMC dropped the idea after an epic social media backlash to the idea. Here’s what AMC CEO Adam Aron said via Twitter:

At least AMC got a clue. But it should not have taken something like that to happen for AMC to conclude that when people want to see a movie, they want to do so in peace. Oh, for any millennials who are reading this, your phones are not parts of your body. Put them away, turn them off and experience something other than Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat when you go to a movie theater. Or even outside the movie theater as well. You might be surprised at what you would learn by doing that.
