Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday Dump May Leave PCs Unable To Boot

Well, Patch Tuesday was yesterday, and for some users today is Problem Wednesday as the first dump of patches for Windows 10’s April 2018 update is causing issues for some. Specifically, a number of users have reported that installing the update is causing their computers to be unable to boot according to a large number of users on Microsoft’s Answers forum.

Microsoft hasn’t responded to this latest issue with the April 2018 update, seeing as it has had other issues. But one workaround in the absence of an official Microsoft solution is to try the following:

  • Hit F11 as soon as the computer powers on. This can get you to the Advanced Startup Options menu, but it also depends on the manufacturer. And if nothing works, the PC should automatically boot to Advanced Startup after several failed boot attempts.
  • In Advanced options, click “Go back to the previous build”.
  • If that doesn’t work, your only option is to do a System Restore
