When It Comes To Twitter, I’m Out At The End Of The Year

Following up on this post, I would like to announce that as of December 31st, I will no longer be posting on Twitter. And as of January 31st, I will delete my Twitter account. Given everything that has happened since Elon Musk took over Twitter, I have come to the following conclusion. Remaining on Twitter only puts money into Elon’s pockets and only serves to validate his unacceptable behaviour. Thus exiting Twitter is the only reasonable action that I can take to stop from putting money into Elon’s pockets and validating his unacceptable behaviour.

Now a lot of you will ask why I don’t just close my Twitter account on December 31st. There’s two reasons behind that:

  • I have a lot of PR companies, brands, and the like who need time so that they can transition over their activities to align with what I am doing. By the way, my engagement levels on Mastodon are exponentially better than my engagement levels on Twitter. So if you’re a PR firm or a company looking to get your message out, you want to forget about Twitter and find ways to engage with users on Mastodon.
  • It appears that I will need time to get my Twitter archive as it apparently takes a significant amount of time to download. And I am not willing to let it disappear. Or remain solely in the hands of Elon Musk.

Another question a lot of you will ask is if you should dump Twitter. I can’t make that call for you as that’s really your decision. But what I would say is if you don’t support any or all of the following, you should dump Twitter:

  • Racism
  • Hate speech
  • Bigotry
  • Anti semitic activity
  • Silencing of journalists
  • Embracing of conspiracy theroies

I’m sure there’s a few more reasons, but there are so many negative things that Elon Musk has allowed onto Twitter, that I can’t possibly list them all. The fact is regardless of how long the list is, I would argue that if you remain on Twitter, you implicitly support such behaviour whether you actually buy into any of the above or not. Or put another way, if any or all of the items on that list bother you, then you should consider quitting Twitter.

The last point that I’d like to make is where you can find me on Mastodon which is where I have been calling home for some time. My Mastodon account is @The_It_Nerd@Noc.social. And if you want to join me on Mastodon, here’s a guide that can help you to get onto the platform easily. Having been on there for almost two months, I can say that Mastodon is the exact opposite Elon Musk’s Twitter “hellscape” as all are welcome there. Well, maybe all with the exception of Elon Musk.

It’s a pity that Twitter has descended into the state that it’s in. But that doesn’t mean that I am a hostage to that platform. Thus I will pick up and move to another social media platform that respects people, human rights, and freedom of speech. Because it is clear that Elon Musk doesn’t respect any of those things. And I will watch this narcissistic man child drive Twitter into the ground from someplace else.
