Toronto-based Aptum, a global provider of Managed Services and Advisory & Consulting Services, today announced the launch of Part 1 of its annual Cloud Impact Study 2023 – Clear Skies Ahead: Avoiding Chaos in the Cloud.
The findings reveal that overall, a lack of a visibility and understanding of cloud infrastructure is resulting in the benefits of cloud not being realized. Additionally, while the majority (98%) of respondents are satisfied with the rate of cloud transformation in their organization (100% in Canada), challenges related to the management and optimization of cloud spending remain.
Some additional highlights from respondents (in particular Canadian organizations) include:
- Globally, 59% of respondents are using a combination of public and private cloud services; in Canada, that figure is 66% or almost two-thirds; 19% use private cloud only
- Globally, 73% of survey respondents agreed that cloud costs are higher than expected in their organization; in Canada, that number jumped to 86%
- When asked how important public cloud computing is in helping their organization to mitigate against challenges presented by the economic downturn, 68% of Canadian respondents said it was very important
- The top challenges perceived by Canadian organizations when operating in a cloud environment include data privacy and security (50%); cloud performance/reliability (45%); and migrating data or applications to the cloud (44%)
- The top three cloud priorities for Canadian organizations for 2023 are improving their cloud strategy (37%), improving cloud security (35%) and enhancing analytics and BI reporting in the cloud (35%)
- 77% of Canadian organizations agreed that complexity and abundant choices make choosing the right cloud strategy difficult (compared to 72% globally)
- When asked what is holding them back from using advanced cloud services, 42% of Canadian organizations said lack of knowledge in their technical teams, 40% said resistance to change among their teams; globally, the top two reasons were legacy applications that need significant refactoring (34%) and lack of knowledge in their technical teams (31%)
The hybrid cloud environment is gathering momentum and delivering benefits to organizations. However, these benefits are often unclear or limited by a lack of visibility and understanding of cloud infrastructure.
Organizations can overcome the challenges of cloud complexity and prevent out-of-control costs by understanding and optimizing their cloud architectures. To achieve this and ensure business success, IT leaders should consider implementing the following three action points, emphasizing the importance of development team practices and tools while incorporating DevOps and FinOps principles:
- Conduct a comprehensive cloud assessment
- Implement cloud governance and cost management policies
- Leverage automation, monitoring tools, and development team practices
