Elon Musk has claimed in the past that a lot of the stuff he’s done on Twitter was to solve the bot problem on Twitter. But from what I can tell, the bot problem on Twitter is a bad as it has ever been. And The Wall Street Journal reported this week that the level of bot activity on Twitter is about the same as before Musk took over. So clearly that’s not working. So Elon has a new plan:
So to make it clear, Elon is going to limit the ability to send DM’s to people who don’t follow you to verified users only. Now let me be clear, this will do nothing to stop the bot problem because verification is a sham. I say that because the bar to get verified is pretty low based on this. So there’s quite literally nothing stopping a bad actor from creating a bunch of accounts, waiting 30 days, whipping out their credit card to sign up for Twitter Blue and having a burner handy to get verified. Maybe Elon should have thought of this before going down this path. But then Elon is a “ready, fire, aim” sort of guy. Thus I should not be shocked or surprised that he didn’t think this through.
