Energy Sector Cybersecurity assessment reveals hidden risks across 21 Major U.S. Providers amid rising geopolitical threats

SixMap has released a comprehensive cybersecurity assessment of 21 leading U.S. energy providers. The report reveals hidden and systemic risks that could leave critical infrastructure vulnerable to highly targeted  state-sponsored and financially-motivated cyber threat groups.

The research, titled “Energy Sector Exposure Assessment,” identified 39,986 hosts with 58,862 services exposed to the Internet across these organizations. Approximately 7% of all exposed services are running on non-standard ports—outside the top 5,000 most commonly used ports and the scope of traditional security tools—creating dangerous blind spots for security teams.

The research also found that, on average, each organization had 9% of its hosts in the IPv6 space, a surprisingly high share and an area of potential risk, as most security teams have no way to asess and monitor  assets that are using the most recent version of the Internet Protocol.
