CISA warns hackers are actively exploiting WordPress vulnerability

The CISA has added a high-severity WordPress vulnerability to its KEV catalog after confirming that attackers are exploiting the flaw in the wild.

Tracked as CVE-2026-119977, the vulnerability carries a CVSS score of 8.1 and could allow unauthenticated attackers to execute malicious code on affected website servers.

The flaw involves a race condition in WordPress Core’s update process that exposes predictable, web-accessible staging directories during software upgrades. Attackers can exploit the brief window when update files are being unpacked to execute code remotely.

WordPress released security updates on October 28, including version 7.1.4, to address the issue.

CISA has ordered federal civilian agencies to remediate the vulnerability by November 6.

“Exploiting a race-condition vulnerability like this enables attackers to execute code on the web server with no login required, which on most WordPress sites is also where the database credentials and admin access live.

“Patching to 7.1.4 closes the window going forward, but teams need to know what this touches in their environment. Any site that ran a WordPress update before patching to 7.1.4 should look for unexpected files in the staging directories, unknown admin users, modified theme or plugin code, and outbound traffic from the web server that doesn’t match normal patterns.”

“Like the Eye of Sauron, the attention of hackers, security professionals, and researchers is now fixed on WordPress. We see this all the time. One vulnerability comes to light, and suddenly there’s a pig pile of people digging into the same technology, especially when it involves encoding and decoding or compressing and decompressing data.

“Once someone finds a weakness, other researchers start looking for similar problems in that same area. That’s what we’re seeing here. I expect that scrutiny to continue until the discoveries start to taper off. Then the eye will turn toward another technology, and the whole thing will start again.”

This once again proves that the CISA needs to be funded as it forces organizations to stay safe. Conversely if they’re gone, you need to fend for yourself as this also proves that there are threats out there that you need to deal with quickly.
