The news is breaking that Telus is taking the Canadian Government to federal court over their wireless policy. The Globe and Mail sums up why in a nutshell:
Telus Corp. is taking the federal government to court over its wireless policy, arguing Ottawa has unfairly disrupted investment plans by changing the rules governing the transfer of spectrum licences between carriers.
And:
In an application for a judicial review filed in Federal Court on Monday, Telus contends that Ottawa has indefinitely extended what was supposed to be a five-year ban on major carriers purchasing spectrum initially set aside for new entrants into the market.
I can understand why Telus would be doing this. Of the big three telcos, they’re third on that list. Thus if Verizon shows up, they have the most to lose. Regardless, I think it’s safe to say that all out war has been declared by the big three as PR campaigns are clearly not enough to turn the tide. Now I am not a lawyer so I will not be commenting on the merits of the case. But I will say this. I’ll be expecting similar lawsuits from Bell and Rogers shortly as I suspect that they will want to get in on the action. Here’s hoping that the Canadian Government brings the big guns to court to defend themselves.
