Microsoft has apparently decided to move away from the use of Jerry Seinfeld in “phase two” of their $300 million ad campaign. Whether this was part of the plan or this is a change in course because the ads suck is open to debate though. The New York Times has an article on “phase two” where the Microsoft ads will directly attack Apple with the intensity of a rabid Republican on crack:
One new Microsoft commercial even begins with a company engineer who resembles John Hodgman, the comedian portraying the loser PC character in the Apple campaign. “Hello, I’m a PC,” the engineer says, echoing Mr. Hodgman’s recurring line, “and I’ve been made into a stereotype.”
Also, big name celebs like Eva Longoria, Deepak Chopra, and Pharrell Williams will make appearances in the ads. Bill Gates will make appearances too. Of interest, the article cites a number of research companies who felt that the buzz surrounding the first two ads were sufficiently positive and accomplished their goal.
I’m sure there was buzz around the first two ads. Almost all of it was confusion. But I guess in adverstising, any buzz is good buzz.
UPDATE: Gizmodo is reporting that the Seinfeld/Gates ads aren’t quite dead yet.
