BlackBerry World App Store Online [UPDATED x4]

In an attempt to blunt the effect of the Apple App Store, RIM has opened the Blackberry World App Store so that BlackBerry addicts users can download apps to their devices and make RIM along with the cellular carriers a lot of money. From the press release:

“The BlackBerry platform provides a truly unparalleled mobile experience for millions of people and we are thrilled today to enhance that experience with a new app store that helps connect consumers with developers and carriers,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO. “BlackBerry App World aggregates a wide variety of personal and business apps in a way that makes it very easy for consumers to discover and download the apps that suit them while preserving the appropriate IT architecture and controls required by our enterprise customers.”

“BlackBerry App World provides a fantastic new resource for consumers and an equally exciting progression of business opportunities for our developer and carrier partners,” said Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO. “We are launching BlackBerry App World with a solid selection and we look forward to working with our partners to continue delivering the types of apps that best suit our customers’ personalized needs and interests.”

The App world is available in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada today. More countries to follow shorly. I’ll pay the App Store a visit sometime today and let you know what I think.

UPDATE: This doesn’t show a lot of promise. Despite the fact that I have a BlackBerry that meets their system requirements, it won’t let me download the App World application via USB because it claims that I don’t have a BlackBerry that meets their system requirements. Not good….. I am now trying to download the software over the air (which costs me money). I am not impressed so far.

UPDATE #2: Downloading over the air doesn’t work either. It claims that I don’t have a BlackBerry that meets their system requirements. I own a 8310 with OS 4.5 and it has a trackball. It sounds like I meet their system requirements to me. WTF? Clearly RIM has a few bugs to work out.

UPDATE #3: I still couldn’t download it via USB as that doesn’t seem to work, but I was able to download it over the air (which I am not happy about as it cost me money). It looks sweet but it chews a fair amount of bandwidth from what I can tell. This could get expensive in a big hurry. I will limit my usage accordingly.

UPDATE #4: This post from Pocket Lint explains the issues that I saw.

  1. I have an 8310 and just installed. Perhaps the version of the OS has something in it that is for a country not eligible? I just updated mine with the latest OS on the BlackBerry forums yesterday.

  2. How did you download it? My blackberry meets all the requirements except the fact that i dont have a data plan. I was able to download it over wifi but it wont let me open it… Why??
