Rogers Shuts Down Free Webhosting For Their Users… But Don’t Get Mad At Rogers

Recently, Rogers set got a bunch of their users mad when they made Flickr a paid service. So I wasn’t shocked when one of their users sent me this e-mail that she got in her inbox :

Dear Rogers Yahoo! GeoCities customer,

We’re writing to let you know that GeoCities, our free web site building service and community, is closing on October 26, 2009. On this date, your GeoCities site will no longer appear on the Web, and you will no longer be able to access your GeoCities account and files.

What You Need to Do
If you’re no longer using your web site, you don’t need to do a thing, but if you’d like to move your web site, or save the images and other files you’ve posted online, you need to download your files to your own computer.

To quickly download your published files and images, visit your GeoCities web site, and choose Save As… or Save Page As… from your browser’s File menu. Choose a location on your computer to save your files, then click OK or Save to save the HTML and images associated with your page. Learn more about downloading your files.

Please be aware that after October 26, 2009, your GeoCities files will be deleted from our servers, and will not be recoverable. If you’d like to save your files, you must download them.

Don’t Wait
We encourage you to save your files to your own computer. If you need assistance, please visit our help web site.

We want to thank you for being a GeoCities user, and hope you continue to enjoy our other Rogers Yahoo! services.

Sincerely,

Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet Customer Service

Please do not reply to this message. This is a service email related to your use of Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet. Please read the privacy policies of both Rogers and Yahoo! to learn more about how each company uses your personal information, including the use of Web beacons in HTML-based email. Yahoo! is located at 701 First Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA 94089. Rogers Cable Communications Inc. is located at 333 Bloor Street East, Toronto, Ontario, M4W 1G9

What this means is that if you’re a Rogers user who was using this service, you’re likely scrambling for a place to host your site. Chances are, you’ll have to pay for it too. This particular user wasn’t happy about this. But in reality, she shouldn’t be mad at Rogers for this.

Seriously. The guy who bashes Rogers more often than he praises them is telling you not to be mad at them. Why?

Yahoo announced earlier this year that Geocities (who provided Rogers with web hosting) was closing. So Rogers is simply reacting to that by warning their users that their websites will disappear unless they take action.

See. For a change, Rogers is doing something good.

Of course, if they lowered their prices to account for the services that they’re no longer offering, that would be better.
