Dude! You’re Getting Infected By A Dell!

A reader pointed me towards this posting on a Dell Support Forum where customers who bought a R410 server are being called by the computer maker and being informed of some rather distressing news:

As part of Dell’s quality process, we have identified a potential issue with our service mother board stock, like the one you received for your PowerEdge R410, and are taking preventative action with our customers accordingly. The potential issue involves a small number of PowerEdge server motherboards sent out through service dispatches that may contain malware. This malware code has been detected on the embedded server management firmware as you indicated.

Lovely. Just lovely. It sounds like somebody in Dell’s QA department slipped up big time. There’s no word on what the malware is or what the fix is that Dell will implement (which could include a firmware update or a new motherboard). Nor is there a hint of how many customers are affected. But this is the latest piece of bad press for Dell over the last little while. One wonders when the hits will stop for them.
