Nokia Promises To Take On Apple And Google With New Phones…. But Loses A VP That Can Help Them Do It

Nokia lovers….. I’m not sure how many of them they are…. are gathering at Nokia World 2010 to celebrate all things Nokia. One of the things that came out of this shindig is the vow to reclaim the smartphone market. Part of that strategy is to release two new phones called the C6 and C7. Also, Apple and Google should be afraid of them…. Or so they say:

“We haven’t been as competitive as we want to be in smartphones. That’s about to change,” said Niklas Savender, Nokia’s executive vice president of sales. “Today, we shift into high gear in Nokia’s fight back in smartphone leadership.”

Good luck with that. Nokia once led the smartphone market and now they’re an afterthought. I personally think it’s way too late for them. It also won’t help that their VP and GM of Mobile Solutions has decided to head for the exit:

Anssi Vanjoki, executive vice president and general manager of the Mobile Solutions group and a member of Nokia’s Group Executive Board, is resigning, the company said Monday. Vanjoki will continue in his job for another six months before departing.

“I felt the time has come to seek new opportunities in my life,” Vanjoki said in a statement. “At the same time, I am one hundred percent committed to doing my best for Nokia until my very last working day. I am also really looking forward to this year’s Nokia World and sharing news about exciting new devices and solutions.”

The departure of key employees is never a good sign for a company trying to reboot itself. I’d say that at this point, stick a fork in them, they’re done.

But they could always prove me wrong.
