Review: Blackberry Bold 9780 – Part 3

One of the things that this smartphone comes with is something called Bell GPS Navigator. Like any other GPS app, the Bell GPS Navigator provides users with voice and on-screen directions. This means that as you drive, you get the current street, next turn, distance remaining between turns and the trip, and the estimated time of arrival. Here’s the catch, Bell customers must choose from one of two options:

  • Monthly subscription $10, OR
  • One-Time subscription $49.99 (life of phone)

So this is going to cost you. So after confirming that I could use it, I decided to give it a try. It’s a nice turn by turn app that is worth using if you don’t mind springing for it. If you were going to buy a turn by turn GPS app (meaning not Google Maps) anyway, then you should take a look at this if you’re on the Bell network. I mention that because this app is only available to Bell customers.

Some other things that I noticed were as follows:

  • There’s a Visual Voicemail feature. It’s apparently another $5 a month to Bell subscribers.
  • There’s a Remote PVR app that you can use to set your Bell PVR to record Desperate Housewives when you’re not at home. The catch is that you have to get your TV and PVR from Bell. This is apparently free.
  • There’s a Bell TV and Radio App as well that allows you to watch TV on your Blackberry. I’m not sure if I want to want to watch TV on my Blackberry, but if you want to, it will cost you anywhere from $5 to $15 a months depending on what you want to watch.

Of course these are all Bell specific apps so if you get your 9780 from another carrier, you won’t see these. But this is an interesting addition to the 9780 to try and set it apart from other carriers who offer the same phone.
