Apple Announces The Next iPad And Apple TV…. Fanbois Rejoyce

Today Apple CEO Tim Cook had one of those Apple press events to announce two new ways for Apple fanbois to spend their money. The first is is the new Apple TV. It now offers 1080P video and it has a new user interface and iCloud support. It’s $99 USD and will be available on March 16.

But the big news is what Apple is calling The Next iPad. Here’s some quick specs:

  • A Retina display measuring in at 2048 x 1536 pixels.
  • An A5X system-on-chip with quad-core graphics
  • A 5-megapixel rear camera with 1080p video recording.
  • Voice dictation just like what’s found on the iPhone 4S
  • 4G supporting data speeds of up to 21 Mbps on HSPA+, 42 Mbps on dual-carrier HSPA+, and 73 Mbps on LTE
  • Battery life of 10 hours on Wi-Fi or 9 hours on 4G
  • Capacities if at 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB
  • iOS 5.1 (hitting the streets shortly)

Pricing remains the same at $499/$599/$699 for Wi-Fi models and $629/$729/$829. This too will be available on March 16th.

Of interest, Apple will also continue to offer the 16 GB iPad 2 in both Wi-Fi ($399) and Wi-Fi + 3G ($529) models.

There was lots more announced as well. You can watch the press event here.

Is the next iPad a game changer? I would say yes. RIM has a lot to be afraid of as this on paper crushes the Playbook from a hardware perspective. Android tablets, not so much for now. But they should watch their backs.
