I think it’s a safe bet that Tim Cook is ticked and Steve Jobs is not smiling from above. That’s because Apple nemesis Google has released Google Maps for iOS and in a very short amount of time it has set records in terms of the number of times it has been downloaded and in terms or ratings.
Features include:
- turn-by-turn navigation
- public transit directions
- Google local search
A Google blog post has more details.
Reviews are already coming in and they’re largely positive. For example, here’s what David Pogue had to say:
But for a 1.0 app, created in the space of only a few months, Google Maps for iPhone is an astonishingly powerful, accurate, beautiful tool. For millions of iPhone owners, it’s a drive in the right direction.
For those of you not in the know, Pogue is a bit of an Apple Fanboi.
Clearly this sort or response shows you how bad Apple Maps is. If I were Tim Cook, I would throw whatever resources are required to fix their mapping solution before it embarrasses them any further.
