Rogers Internet Goes Down….. Outrage And Frustration Ensues

I was out with friends last night and tried to pay for my meal with Visa. The server told me that I couldn’t because Rogers Internet was down and their credit and debit machines were not working as a result. I went to a few other places that night and got heard the same thing. To top it off, I had a couple of my residential customers call me to ask if I knew anything about why their Rogers Internet was down.

I’m sure Rogers had a really fun night.

In any case, several media outlets have reported that this issue affected both wireless and home Internet customers in Ontario, though it’s clearly also affected business customers too. Those who could get on line vented their frustration on Twitter:

Internet is not working and #Rogers tech support lines aren’t working .. nice … how come their billing system never fails?

A lot of productivity lost tonight from #Rogers outage. For the length of time, customers should see some compensation

As I type this, I have several e-mails from residential and business customers of mine who are asking for referrals to other ISPs. Thus I suspect that Rogers is going to have another fun day trying to retain customers.

Now outages happen with any Internet provider. But I suspect the rage that you see is do the the fact that Rogers continues to have such a negative reputation in the marketplace. Whether it deserves it or not is the subject of another post. But because of this negative reputation, any issue that hits this telco turns into negative press instantly. That’s not a good thing. Rogers really needs to do something about that sooner rather than later as stories like these can’t be good for business over the long term.
