The big three telcos have opened a new front has opened up in the battle against Verizon. I noted that a website called Fair For Canada has appeared along with a video that shows employees of Rogers, Bell and Telus saying things like this:
“When I found out that our government is getting a giant U.S. cellphone company to come to Canada, I thought, will there be thousands of jobs lost?”
“Our government is allowing a giant U.S. cellphone company to buy up small Canadian operators that cellphone companies like mine aren’t allowed to buy. Since we can’t bid, they’ll likely even get a huge discount on the price, effectively at Canadian taxpayers’ expense.”
“So why is our government giving a giant U.S. corporation special treatment? That’s not real competition.”
There are also links to stories from a variety of Canadian media outlets that push the case that Verizon either shouldn’t be allowed into the country, or the rules for the upcoming spectrum auction have to be changed to make it more fair for the big three. There’s also this tagline in the video as well as various places in this website:
“Sweetheart deals for U.S. giants are a bad call for you.”
Now, one thing I note is that Verizon is never mentioned. But it’s clear that they along with the Canadian Government are the targets.
Clearly the big three are extremely worried about the potential entry of Verizon. It’s really pathetic that instead of stepping up their game to take Verizon on by offering better pricing and better service, they decide to go this route. The fact that there’s more campaigns like these appearing from the big three, it make it clear that they’re quite desperate to keep the status quo going so only they benefit and Canadian consumers lose. Unfortunately for the big three, Canadians are so fed up with them that they’re not afraid of Verizon entering the market. So perhaps the big three might want to ready themselves to actually do something they’ve never had to do before…. Compete.
